| Butterfly Gardening When it's time to get the butterfly garden spruced up for summer, Donna Legare will teach you how to create or add to a garden that blooms all summer and fall and nurtures a variety of colorful butterflies and hummingbirds. | Butterflies Like it Hot Summer may be hot, but it is not too late to get going on a butterfly garden that will provide color for the rest of the summer and fall, as well as colorful butterflies and hummingbirds. Donna Legare will teach you how and also teach you how to entice mother butterflies to lay their eggs in your garden so you can watch the caterpillars transform into butterflies. | Metamorphosis Magic Learn about the natural history of butterflies and moths and how to successfully raise caterpillars into butterflies. After the slide show, Donna Legare will take you on a tour of Native Nurseries butterfly garden. We usually have plenty of caterpillars for folks to take home and raise. | Parent/Child Bird House Build We will start inside with a short slide presentation about birds that depend on natural cavities in trees and nest boxes. Then we will teach the children, with your help, how to build a chickadee or bluebird house. Don't forget to bring a hammer. | CHILDREN'S GARDEN WORKSHOP: Hands-on Butterfly Gardening We will teach the children, with your help, how to create a container garden (3-gallon nursery container) with plants that will attract butterflies - pentas, parsley, milkweed and another flowering plant. Siblings can work together. There is a fee for the Children's Gardening Workshops and pre-registration is required. Hands-on Butterfly Gardening is usually offered in the spring. | CHILDREN'S GARDEN WORKSHOP: Grow Your Own Italian Garden The children will mix soil and mushroom compost in a 3-gallon nursery container and then plant a tomato, basil, parsley and garlic chive plant under the guidance of our employees and a parent. | Pinecone/Suet Feeder Making With your help, your child will make a pinecone/suet feeder, using Native Nurseries' suet (made fresh right here at the nursery) and our own Native Nurseries' Wild Bird Mix. | Learn to Grow Carnivorous Plants! Jimmy Bone, Florida Certified Nursery Professional and owner of North Florida Carnivorous Plants Nursery, will give you an up-close look at many of our carnivorous plants and share how easy they are to grow. We sell a variety of his plants - Hooded Pitcher Plant, Sundew, Venus Flytrap, Yellow Pitcher Plant, Tarnok, Trumpet Leaf. | Invasive Plant Workshop with Donna and Jody After attending an invasive plant workshop at the Cullowhee Native Plant Conference in North Carolina this summer (2010) and observing the spread of many invasive plants in our local parks and private lands, we decided to teach this workshop on identifying invasive alien plants in your yard and the best ways to get rid of them. It is something we can all work on over time and make a difference! The Invasive Plant Workshop is a free workshop and was first offered in the fall of 2010. | Celebration of Trees w/Donna, Jody and Timothy Join us for a brief indoor presentation by certified arborist, Timothy Roop. He will discuss the latest research on how to select healthy trees at a nursery and the proper way to plant and prune trees. Then Jody and Donna will lead a walk around the nursery and next door property to identify and discuss how to position native trees and shrubs in the landscape. | Creating Water Features with Brian Bryson Brian Bryson will show slides of the many garden ponds he has designed and installed for our landscape clients. His designs highlight the sound and movement of water in the landscape, as well as provide water for birds and a habitat for frogs, fish and invertebrates. His talk will help you select the best location and water feature design for your yard. Included will be a 'how to' segment on building your own pond and waterfall and how to maintain it. This workshop usually concludes with a brief presentation by Norma Skaggs on native pond plants. We stock native pond plants, fieldstone, lava rock and extra thick pond liner! | Annual Herbal Event Join professional herb grower, B O'Toole of O'Toole's Herb Farm, and Native Nurseries' Donna Legare to learn how to grow and enjoy herbs. | Fall Herb Gardens and Edible Greens There is no reason to have a barren herb garden this winter. There are many herbs that look their finest in cool weather. Lilly Anderson-Messec and Donna Legare will discuss herbs and leafy greens that thrive in winter and how to use them in cooking. (Donna's note: I have found winter gardens so much easier than summer gardens and usually produce abundant lettuce all winter long by planting between dormant plants in my butterfly garden.) | BACK YARD AGRICULTURE: Beekeeping & Chicken Rearing Dr. Kelly Watson, Lecturer in Geography and Environmental Science at FSU, raises chickens and keeps bees in her backyard in Tallahassee. She also tends a research hive at Native Nurseries for an FSU study on pollen found in urban hives. Kelly will team up with Vanessa Walthall who will share her experiences keeping a small flock of chickens in her yard next door to the nursery. Dr. Watson will also report on her research on tupelo trees and bees along the Apalachicola River. Come meet Artemis, Persephone and Demeter - Vanessa's chickens that produce large and delicious eggs. Backyard Agriculture is a free workshop, offered by Native Nurseries for the first time in February of 2011, and will most likely be split into two workshops in the future. | Organic Morning at Native Nurseries Organic Morning at Native Nurseries is an event we put on each fall to give you an opportunity to meet, visit with and purchase from the owners of some innovative businesses that use a more natural approach to agriculture in our area. Some of them are certified organic and all of them use natural, sustainable methods to produce healthy products for you and your family. Some of the vendors and activities vary from year to year, but here is a partial list from past years: O'Toole's Herb Farm, certified organically grown herb and vegetable plants Ladybird Organics/Monticello Vineyards, certified organic wine and grapes, worm castings and free range chickens TurkeyHill Farm, a certified naturally grown farm, Community Supported Agriculture Orchard Pond Organics, certified organic produce, raw and unfiltered Tupelo honey, Community Supported Agriculture Sweet Grass Dairy, happy animals produce happy milk & happy milk makes the best cheese KBH Farms, grass fed ground beef There are other activities going on during Organic Morning. We always have a related workshop that morning and an expert on hand to answer all your gardening questions. In past years the expert has been Farmer Herman Holley of Turkey Hill Farm or Ken Bernhard from Grady County. And Vanessa leads informal tours next door to share information on raising backyard chickens for eggs. Her chickens live in a moveable "chicken tractor" that she built herself.
