Native Azaleas at Native Nurseries

Native Azalea - Piedmont - R. canescens
Although called wild honeysuckle by old timers, native azaleas (like the evergreen, Asian species) are of the genus Rhododendron. There are a number of native azalea species that thrive in the Tallahassee area, and we almost always have a good stock of them at Native Nurseries. Once established, they are very hardy in our area and require little care. Click here for important information about watering. Native Azalea - Florida Azalea - R. austrinum
Native Azalea - Alabama - R. Alabamense Most of the native azaleas bloom in the spring before their new foliage develops, and most of them are very fragrant. The pink blossoms of the Piedmont azalea (R. canescens) are the first to be seen every year (sometimes as early as February) and the Florida azalea (R. austrinum) comes next with its beautiful orange/yellow flowers. Both these species are very fragrant. We also carry Alabama (white with a yellow throat), Hammock Sweet (white), Plumleaf (red) and Oconee (shades of orange, salmon, yellow and pink – but it looks like a very vibrant orange from a distance).
Native azaleas thrive in light shade. Pine tree shade works well, and the fallen, decomposing needles help keep the soil acid as well. Like other Rhododendrons, native azaleas like an acid soil. Morning or late afternoon sun is also desirable, but do not plant your native azaleas where they’ll get full midday sun. Native Azalea - Oconee - R. flammeum
